She waited on this grumpy old man every day without complaint. But when he passed away, she found out who he really was.

Here lately it seems like everyone has at least one thing or another to grumble about or one reason or another to be angry. There’s problems with politics and social issues that have ruined friendships and relationships this year, but we seem to be forgetting the people behind the beliefs. Anyone who has ever worked as a waiter or waitress could tell you that, they end up dealing with more pissed off people daily than most of us do in an entire year, and the brunt of that anger is usually (mistakenly) directed towards the workers.

Melina Salazar is a waitress working at Luby’s in Brownsville, Texas who wound up dealing with the same angry man every single day. This was a man who always had something to complain about and who had a highly particular way of doing things. His orders were always complicated and HAD to be delivered piping hot, enough to burn the average person’s tongue. When he first started coming around the other waiters and waitresses quickly stopped serving him until Melina was literally the only person who would. Walter “Buck” Swords was the pure definition of an unhappy customer, but being an 89-year-old WWII veteran he has plenty of reasons to be unhappy.

Even though dealing with Mr. Swords was such a struggle, Melina never made him feel that way. She would serve him with a smile and a pleasant disposition each and every day. They kept up this routine for seven years before Mr. Swords stopped turning up, which is when Melina actually got worried. She decided to open up a newspaper and checked the obituaries; lo’ and behold there was Walter Sword’s name on the page. A little sad that such a big part of her routine was now gone she did her best to fall back into work and the rest of her daily life, but it wasn’t long before she received one last surprise from the old man.

Mr. Swords actually decided to leave her a “small” inheritance since she had been so kind to him for all those years. He had left her $50,000 and a car, all because she treated him like an actual human being rather than a problem or annoyance. She never expected or even wanted a reward for what she considered both just doing her job and being a decent person, so you can only imagine the shock the news brought about.

This is what humanity is actually capable of when we put aside our prejudices for a few moments in the day; I’m just happy we get to share it!
